Fall Invitational 2026 - Save the Date!

Howdy everyone! We're excited to announce the next MidDigs Volleyball Tournament: Fall 2026 edition is set for November 7, 2026!
Right now, the admins for this event are hard at work at finalizing the details but for now we wanted to let you know the following important dates and info:
- Registration will open Monday September 28 at 10am at the following link: middigsvolleyball.com/#registration
- Any registrations recieved after the 80 player slots are filled will be waitlisted
- Like previous tournaments, this will be a 4v4 teams tournament. However, this time we will not be allowing folks to submit a partner to pair up with in order to more effectively balance teams
- Like previous tournaments, we will have an Intermediate and Advanced bracket, which will include a mix of Big Digs and Midkyu players, for a total of 80 participants!
- The tournament will have a mandatory $10 fee for competitive play that goes towards permits, prizes, and snacks.
We will continue to update you in the following weeks and are excited to see you all play! General news and updates will be provided in the #mid-digs channel in the MidKyu discord server, the #tournament-talk channel in the Big Digs discord server, as well as being posted at middigsvolleyball.com.

🤝 We encourage everyone to play with their team before the tournament! Mid-kyu is hosting their grass session this Sunday at Breen Park from 1pm-7pm. Big Digs will also have sessions at Breen on Tuesday and Thursday from 5pm-7pm. Please RSVP to each group separately before coming!

MidDigs Spring Invitational 2026 Announced!

With the grass volleyball season returning soon, we'll be hosting our second official tournament: the MidDigs Spring Invitational 2026 on Saturday, April 4th. We'll announce more details soon, but you can expect a similar format and community-focused vibe 😎.
Rules
Gameplay
Scoring
- Games will go up to 21 points (win by 2), with a cap of 23 points for all non-playoff games
- Teams will swap sides every 7 points
- Points may be replayed if there is an interference (ball on the court)
- Excessive crossing of the centerline will result in a loss of the point
Serving
- Players must follow rotation order for serving but positions are allowed
Ball Handling
- Open hand receives are allowed
- A double contact is allowed during the setting action as long as the ball stays on the same side of the net
- A double contact can be called if there are two clearly separate touches (for example, if the ball visibly bounces off both hands), or if the ball is played into the opponent's court
Attacking
- No open hand tips; players must use a closed fist, knuckle, or palm to send the ball over
- When setting the ball over, your body must be squared and the ball must travel according to where your body is facing
- Players can attack from any position in the court
- There is no antenna so the allowable hitting space can exceed the court space - referees have the final call
Blocking
- Block contact does not count as one of the 3 touches
- No limit to the amount of blockers
- A blocker may not cross the plane of the net and touch the ball unless the ball is being sent over as an attack
Net
- Touching the net with any part of the body is NOT allowed
Conduct
- Respect all players, officials, and spectators
- Follow officials' decisions
- Good sportsmanship is expected at all times
- Be respectful and ask permission before using chairs or equipment that do not belong to you
- Clean up after yourself and do not litter in the park
Frequently Asked Questions
This is a closed-group tournament only offered to members of the Big Digs or Mid-Kyu volleyball communities.
Every team consists of 4 players, and each team is determined before the tournament begins. The tournament admins will determine the teams with the goals of fair play and a fun social atmosphere.
In order to create a more fun and social atmosphere, this time partner preference will not be available for request. However, if you have special circumstances that you would like to have considered for the team building, please reach out to an admin directly.
This tournament will have an Intermediate and Advanced bracket of play. All players are expected to have a basic level of skill in grass 4s volleyball.
During registration you can specify your preference on bracket placement, however the admin team will make the final decisions for balancing the brackets. Generally speaking, Intermediate players are considered B/BB level and Advanced players are BB/A level.
Still in the early learning stages but knows the skills. Can bump, set, and spike, but not yet consistently. Makes mistakes and can't always direct passes to specific players.
7/10 passes go to the intended player. Understands rotational sequence, offensive concepts (5-1, 6-2, etc.), and defensive positions. Knows the footwork and approach for hitting effectively.
9/10 passes go to the intended player. Can run complex plays and attacks when passes are good. Game and player strategies are well understood and applied in competition.
Yes, there is a mandatory $10 registration fee for competitive play. This goes directly towards prizes for the winning teams. If you'd like to attend as a spectator or play on the casual court only. Payment details will be explained in the registration form.
We will not be providing lunch during the tournament, but instead snacks and drinks for tournament players. Please plan accordingly and bring your own food and drinks.
The first 80 confirmed competitive registrations will be secured a spot. Any registrations beyond that will be placed on a waitlist.
Absolutely! There will be one dedicated court available for casual play throughout the event, and spectators are welcome. If you'd like to attend casually or as a spectator, you have the option of purchasing a t-shirt separately — no competitive registration fee required.

Important Info
- If a player is late or missing for a game, teams will be forced to play with less than 4 members
- Non-playoff games go up to 21 points (win by 2 with a cap of 23 points)
- All playoff games go up to 25 points (win by 2 with no cap)
- Finals are best of 3 where the third set is to 15 (win by 2 with no cap)

Format & Tiebreakers
The tournament uses a two-stage format. All teams begin in a group Swiss stage, where teams are paired against opponents with similar records each round. The top 6 teams from the Swiss stage then advance to a single-elimination bracket to determine the tournament winner.
In the single single-elimination bracket, the first and second seed will have a bye to Semifinals and the remaining teams will play eachother in the Quarterfinals.
In a Swiss stage, no teams are eliminated — everyone plays the same number of rounds. After each round, teams are paired against other teams with the same record (e.g., 1-0 plays 1-0, 0-1 plays 0-1). This ensures each match is competitive and meaningful, and that your final standing reflects your overall performance across all rounds.
When two or more teams are tied at the end of the group stage, the following tiebreakers are applied in order:
- Number of wins against teams with the same W/L record
- Total number of wins
- Overall point differential
